I bought a Zumo 665LM with XM radio and have the output plugged into my aux plug in the left pocket. I get that dreaded alternator whine but my biggest concern is the sound quality, maybe one is related to the other. I was looking at Electric Connection's interface www.electricalconnection.com/audio/03122.htm Does it work through the aux connection? Is this what I need to improve the sound? Thanks in advance for your help? Rick

Rick, I had the 665 and did have the EC GLI as part of my "in-line" solution on the '01' and have it installed on the '04' with good results as far as removing the alternator whine. I am using the J&M head sets and with both the 665 and now the 590 and do not have any issues with the sound quality.

Rick, I have a 66oLM on my bike. I'm using the Kennedy IsoSet for the alternator whine issue. It must work because I don't have the whine you're referring to. Lewis (Electrical Connection) also has a Ground Loop Isolator (GLI) available. I have no personal experience with it, but those I know that do have it say it works as described. As far as your music sounding bad, might I suggest it's the quality of your music files (MP3's). Were they ripped correctly or is the source you're getting your music from, a quality source? If alternator whine is an issue, solve that problem first. Once that's resolved, you can then tackle the quality of the music file. PC Magazine did a good write up on MP3 audio quality several years ago and how it relates to file size. Read this article. It might give you some insight as to why your music might sound bad.

Bartman, I don't have any MP3 files loaded on it yet, I was referring to the sound of the XM radio. I've used it in my car and it's fine so I'll do what both you and Wheels suggested, eliminate that whine (no Jim I didn't say 'wine') first. All of that wlll have to wait until this deep freeze we're in subsides significantly. Next week is March isn't it or did I get stuck in some sort of January groundhog day?

Rick,
Try this. Try playing the XM without starting the bike. Can you get any XM signal with the bike in the garage? If not, put the XM antenna somewhere you can get signal or back the bike out just enough to get signal. How does the radio sound now? If it's bad, make sure your connections are tight, specifically the AUDIO OUT from the GPS to the AUX IN on the bike. If it still sounds bad, then it's either your amp on speakers on the bike. How does FM radio sound compared to the XM? Test the bike's speakers and your helmet speakers. It's a process of elimination. If the radio (XM/FM) sound good with the bike off and bad with the bike on, then chances are it's a ground loop issue.

I've tried what you suggested and the volume is only poor on the XM radio and you can hear the whine when you rev the engine. I'll install the ground loop isolator and see what happens.
