As you know, budget cuts eliminated military flyovers at large events
for awhile. Well, there's a group of guys in Kansas City who do some
formation flying, in their own planes, and decided they'd volunteer to
pick up the slack. They invited a couple of other groups to join them
and before they knew it they had 48 guys with their homemade Radio
Controlled airplanes signing up to join in. If they had more time,
they probably would have gotten an even larger group as people kept
joining and a 49th was added near the event. One additional feature
of the flyover was the use of pink smoke for cancer awareness.
The folks from the Guinness Book were there and are expected to
confirm it as the largest formation flight ever. And to top it off
the crowd later set the record for the loudest gathering at a football
stadium. Be sure your speakers are turned up... best if watch at
'full screen'.

Yep, this was cool. And just to clarify, they were NOT R/C (radio controlled) aircraft, they were RV aircraft, as in Vans Aircraft RV 3/4/7/8/9/10/12 and 14. These are planes you by as kits and build them yourself, the RV8 and RV8a being the most popular. Here is a better video shot from the air: And if you want to know more about Van's aircraft, visit their site: www.vansaircraft.com/You can also go on YouTube and search and find all kind of related videos.

Bart, I should have added a preface that I copied that from another forum and did zero research, just thought it was cool. I wondered how RC's could be that precision in that large a group, now I know. Thanks for clarification and the link. Someone once suggested Google?

If a group ever does a 49 R/C plane formation, it WILL be a record. One of the more interesting aspects of the video is watching the one your shared, shot from the ground and all looks nice and smooth. When you see the one shot from the air, those planes and bouncing all over the place. One of the reasons I don't care for flying during the heat of the day in the summer. Above 3000'-4000' above ground level (AGL), it's not so bad. The air is smoother and cooler. But down low, the effects of convection make it not so much fun, especially if you have passengers with you. Between the heat and the rough air, I've had more then a few people toss their cookies. I don't carry "air sick" bags. I carry HEFTY bags. Bigger target!
