I would be remiss if I did not share here with all of the good folks who are members:
The Mid-Atlantic Mob (MAM) Lead Pencil Run A.K.A. Oyster Festival’s roots go back several years now. What started out as a whim, during a discussion at the first gathering of the MAM in 2007 in Western Maryland has become a long standing (sitting for some) pilgrimage to the beautiful shores of Solomon’s Island, in Southern Maryland, which serves as a fantastic backdrop for this gathering. Each year a group of hearty souls gather in St. Mary’s County during the 3rd weekend of October to celebrate the now famous (infamous for some) MAM Lead Pencil Run which just happens to be in conjunction with the Oyster Festival. While taking over the Comfort Inn in Solomon’s Island, members of the “Family” gather for a renewal of good times, fellowship, lots of laughs, and of course a few bushel of Oysters that are washed down by various forms of liquid refreshments. Rain or shine the MAM Family members can be found gathered round the fire pit telling stories, eating Oysters, and sharing the special liquid creation of the day. Riders have come from all over to participate, Canada, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Tennessee, and many other points. The weekend serves, for some, as that last ride before our bikes are put to bed for the winter season.
Each year seems to be better than the last with the Family Arsonist, Superjett, A.K.A. Mark, surpassing everyone’s expectations with yet another full course buffet of culinary delights that only he can rustle up over the hot coals of a sometimes RAGGING INFERNO of a fire. Oysters you say…….well right after we get them off the boat you can have them steamed, scalded, with melted butter and BBQ sauce (I am getting light headed typing this, LOL), deep fried, battered, and of course everyone’s favorite……..RAW. Now the tradition remains intact as each year efforts are made to find who will be that year’s Oyster Virgin. Once the member has been identified, Mark sets about finding the best (biggest) Oyster and after a few rounds of his now famous Oyster Shooters, the Virgin is brought forward and with the growing chant of the Family as support and encouragement (yeah, that’s what it is), the Oyster Virgin, now somewhat in a clouded state, is encouraged to suck, slurp, and guzzle and all to the cheers of the members who have gone before them. This is something to see I tell ya.
But what else can I do while way down there in Southern Maryland you ask…….well, I am glad you did. For many first timers, there are GPS routes that have been put together for light house tours (there are 6 down there), wineries (there are 6 of those), and if history is your thing, well, all within a day you can basically retrace the steps of John Wilkes Booth and points of interest like Dr. Mudds’ house and other locations along his attempted escape route. At Point Lookout you can learn a great deal about the Civil War and the roll that the grounds of the light house served. On Saturday, after a couple of days eating Oyster by the fire we all ride over to……………………THE OYSTER FESTIVAL. There you can enjoy…………….Oysters and of course no trip is complete without trying an official (you can only get this in Southern Maryland), Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham Sandwich. Again, I am getting misty eyed. Of course there are others things to enjoy and lots of local crafts and artists from the area. Stay as long as you like, or, follow one of the ladies who have discovered this GIGANTIC flea market/yard sale sort of thing that some sneak off too.
On Sunday, as we ready to say our good-byes there is one last LONG ride (6 miles), to one of the area’s best breakfast buffets which has seating reserved for us, and lots of great items on the buffet, liked smoked fish, made to order omelets and too much to type as I need to wipe the tears from my eyes again.
While the Lead Pencil Run is all about having a great time, it is also about “Family.” And that is what you will enjoy about this gathering. A group of riders who share the love of riding and the enjoyment of sharing some laughs along with a few good TRUE Stories, and ………….Oysters.
The information you need is as follows:
When: October 16-18
Where: Comfort Inn- 255 Lore Rd, Solomons, MD 20688
Phone:(410) 326-6303
www.choicehotels.com/maryland/solomons/comfort-inn-hotels/md414?source=gglocaljn
What’s the rate you ask, well, while the rooms typically go for well over $100 per night, once again our MAM Family rate will be $74.95 plus tax, so this is the same rate as last year. Ask for the Lead Pencil group rate. I did check out the Restaurant out back and man have they done a great job remolding and the food was fantastic. While no longer the Captain’s Table, it is now called the Anglers Inn and they are primed and ready for us. Enjoy a few of the pictures from previous years (that were ok to post, LOL), and share some if you have some.
