It's hard to believe that it was almost 3 years to the date that I got the Red Head and thus the new Hannigan HMS 180 Front End. Since getting it, I have chronicled the wear of the tire and shared thoughts about the HMS 180 Front End Design and handling. It has been fun keeping track and sharing and frankly I had no idea that I would end up with over 70,000 miles on one tire for this trike. Yes, the handling changed over the years and it was not until I got the new front tire mounted that I could tell what it was like to have a "round" tire back on. The last few thousand miles I noticed that the handlebars felt a bit "heavy" as the "flat spot" on the tire had grown to about 4+ inches. It was interesting to see that towards the end, the sides of the tire started to get "carved out" and that left a bit of a "ridge" in the center of the tire. I am sure this had/has nothing to do with my aggressive cornering, LOL. I could feel that in the corners. When the tire "rolled" on it's side, I could feel it "bite" and stick really well. As you can see, the cupping that I reported on very early on due to losing some wheel weights really did not change that much, I think the Dynabeads that I added helped with that, and I never had problems with the tire "singing" or any road noise. Now, going back to the new tire, I had to be careful with my weight/balance while turning as I use to handle bars as a way to counter my balance on the bike. Again, no problem. All in all, I am extremely pleased that I went with this set up and of course my new tire is like the old, so I suspect I will be riding with it for the next 70,000 plus miles.
I do believe that I could have gotten more miles out of it, since it still had about 1 MM of tread left if I was riding locally, but after coming off an 8,000 mile ride and looking at two more that would be 3,000 plus each, well, it was time. I hope that in some way my sharing this information over the years was a help. See ya out on the road.
